Telia hands Ericsson Norwegian 5G contract; targets 2020 rollout, launch

9 Oct 2019

Telia Norge has selected Ericsson as its sole 5G RAN vendor. Hardware and software products and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System, including 5G New Radio (5G NR), will be deployed across the network. The vendor will also modernise Telia’s entire RAN as part of the contract, including the deployment of Ericsson Spectrum Sharing software, which will enable Telia to utilise its spectrum for both 4G and 5G services.

Both partners anticipate that the 5G rollout will begin next year and expect that 5G commercial services will be available in 2020. Ericsson and Telia aim to provide nationwide 5G coverage in Norway by end of 2023. In addition to enhanced mobile broadband, Telia Norway is exploring the potential of 5G to enable new opportunities in the IoT and smart cities sectors. As such, Telia and Ericsson are already partnering on 5G pilot network in Trondheim, Norway, incorporating smart transport, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities.
