Canal Plus takeover of M7 Group approved by EC

6 Sep 2019

Pay-TV group Canal Plus, a subsidiary of French listed media company Vivendi, has received clearance from the European Commission (EC) for its takeover of M7 Group, taking Canal Plus’ customer base to close to 20 million, including twelve million in Europe.

In May this year Canal Plus agreed to buy Luxembourg-based M7 from private equity fund Astorg for just over EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion). M7 provides satellite/OTT pay-TV services to around three million European homes, and also owns triple-play broadband internet provider in the Netherlands alongside its Dutch satellite TV unit Canal Digitaal. M7’s other subsidiaries include: TV Vlaanderen/TeleSat (Belgium), HD Austria, Skylink (Czechia and Slovakia) and Diveo (Germany). In May 2019 M7 Group also completed the acquisition of Liberty Global’s satellite TV operations in Hungary (UPC Direct), Romania (FocusSat), Czech Republic and Slovakia (freeSAT).
