Tele2 Latvia unveils first 5G handset; follows Riga launch, 1Gbps tests

3 Sep 2019

Tele2 Latvia has launched its first 5G handset, the Huawei Mate20 X 5G, although connectivity is currently restricted to users in the vicinity of the Mukusala Business Centre in Riga, where the cellco launched its first fully-fledged 5G base transceiver station (BTS) on 18 July. The fifth-generation infrastructure was deployed by Nokia and fully integrated with Tele2’s backbone network.

In a trial staged on 14 August Tele2 confirmed that the 5G cell site in Riga supported download speeds in excess of 1Gbps, while noting that users can expect to experience average download speeds of 750Mbps. Announcing the handset launch, Tele2 indicated that it expects to stage a full commercial launch in the Autumn.

Previously, in September 2018 Tele2 won a 50MHz block of 5G-suitable spectrum in the 3550MHz-3600MHz band in an auction staged by the Public Utilities Commission (Sabiedrisko Pakalpojumu Regulesanas Komisija, SPRK).
