Vodafone Ireland switches on 5G network in five locations

14 Aug 2019

Vodafone Ireland has switched on Ireland’s first commercial 5G network, in collaboration with Swedish vendor Ericsson, with coverage initially restricted to ‘selected areas’ of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Looking ahead, the mobile network operator (MNO) has said it aims to extend the coverage of its 5G infrastructure ‘over the coming months’, although it has not named any target locations for the first phase of expansion.

Meanwhile, the cellco will make two 5G-compatible handsets available to users, namely the Huawei Mate 20X 5G – which is available from today (14 August) – and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which customers are now able to pre-register their interest in. All of the cellco’s existing ‘RED Complete’ tariffs are 5G ready, it has noted, though customers on these plans need to contact Vodafone Ireland to enable their access to the new fifth-generation network, according to the operator’s website.
