Movistar third Mexican cellco to launch VoLTE

22 May 2019

Mobile operator Telefonica Mexico (Movistar) has launched commercial VoLTE services, joining larger rival Telcel and smaller challenger AT&T in offering enhanced 4G voice facilities to smartphone users. Movistar’s LTE network covers roughly 300 cities across Mexico, and the company reported that seven million of its 25.5 million total cellular customers were active LTE users at end-March 2019. The Telefonica group has already launched VoLTE in Latin American markets including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru, with its Uruguayan subsidiary reportedly in a pre-commercial VoLTE phase.
