Vodafone confirmed as strategic partner for third Omani MNO

7 May 2019

Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between a consortium of local investment funds and Vodafone Group regarding the creation of a new mobile network operator (MNO). Times of Oman cites a statement from the TRA as saying that Vodafone has agreed to become a ‘strategic partner’ in the cellco, which will become the Sultanate’s third MNO after Omantel and Ooredoo.

‘Regarding what has been circulating on some websites and social media platforms on Vodafone being granted a licence to be the third mobile operator for public services in the Sultanate, the public authority confirms that what has been reached is the signing of a MoU between the company owned by a local consortium of investment funds and between Vodafone (as a strategic partner) in a move to complete the procedures for obtaining the third operator licence to provide mobile public telecoms services in the Sultanate in accordance with the directives of the government in this regard.’

In October 2017 the Ministry of Transport and Communications instructed the TRA to cancel the tender process for the third MNO licence, which was instead assigned to a consortium of local investment funds and a strategic global partner. The move was aimed at strengthening the role of wealth funds in the country and enable them to contribute further to the national economy.
