Entel profit surges to CLP10bn

7 May 2019

Chilean telecoms group Entel registered consolidated total revenue of CLP474.8 billion (USD699 million) for the first three months of 2019, an increase of 2% year-on-year. EBITDA for the period was up 39% from CLP99.3 billion to CLP137.8 billion, although the operator noted that this was in part due to a change in accounting standards. Excluding these EBITDA rose by 19% y-o-y to CLP118.1 billion the telco explained, attributing the expansion to revenue growth from mobile services in Peru (up 16% y-o-y) and fixed services in Chile (6%). The higher operating revenue combined with lower financial expenses saw net profit reach CLP10.1 billion in Q1 2019 compared to CLP23 million a year earlier. Entel added first quarter results reflected the impact of reductions in mobile termination rates (MTRs) in Chile and Peru of 80% and 56%, respectively.

In terms of subscribers, the group counted a total of 9.36 million mobile subscribers in Chile at end-March 2019 including 4.86 million 4G subscribers, up from 9.27 million and 3.76 million a year earlier. Fixed RGUs, meanwhile, totalled 472,003, up from 452,667. Its Peruvian division saw mobile subscriptions reach 7.97 million from 6.86 million in Q1 2018.
