Umniah inks fibre deal with utility firm

5 Apr 2019

Umniah, the Jordanian mobile and broadband arm of Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco), has signed a partnership agreement with local utility firm Jordan Electric Power Company (JEPCO) to roll out fibre infrastructure. Under the deal, JEPCO and Umniah will establish a new joint venture company to deploy and operate a fibre network covering the areas in which JEPCO operates. The system will initially deliver wholesale broadband bandwidth to telcos and service providers and aims to eventually reach more than 1.4 million homes and businesses.

Commenting on the development, Umniah CEO Ziad Shatara was quoted as saying: ‘Our primary objective is to accelerate internet and digital penetration nationwide and to redefine the way Jordanians perceive and interact with technology. More importantly, this partnership will help propel the local economy by creating an environment that is conducive to business development and growth. This will help create additional job opportunities, all the while providing existing businesses with the tools and infrastructure needed to expand their operations.’

In a press release from the telco, Umniah added that it had completed an over-ground fibre network in 2018 that ran in parallel to JEPCO’s electrical grid and aided in connecting and automating power substations. The system also allowed JEPCO to remotely manage electrical grids in certain areas.
