Vodafone Ireland targets 4Q19 5G launch; activates VoLTE

20 Mar 2019

Vodafone Ireland has revealed that it is extending its 5G trial network in Dublin as it prepares for a commercial launch of the new mobile technology in the fourth quarter of 2019. In response to the high levels of interest, Vodafone told the Irish Times that it plans to double its existing 5G footprint to allow more businesses to test the technology and validate new products and services.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the 5G trial network went live in November last year and utilises the cellco’s 3.6GHz spectrum alongside fully standardised Ericsson 5G equipment.

In other news, Vodafone claims to have launched Ireland’s first VoLTE service, with a parallel VoWiFi service also going live.
