Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones, MTC) has chosen Raul Garcia Loli, the former head of the Fund for Investment in Telecommunications (Fondo de Inversion en Telecomunicaciones, FITEL) as director of the fund’s successor, the National Telecommunications Progamme (Programa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, PRONATEL). The MTC approved plans for the creation of PRONATEL in December last year through the merger of FITEL with the ministry, scheduled to be completed by the end of the month. As with FITEL, PRONATEL has been tasked with narrowing the digital divide, but will have a more ‘efficient and dynamic organisational model’. PRONATEL will also have a broader scope in that it may utilise a wider range of resources than its predecessor and may execute a wider range of projects, including promotion of digital skills and rural infrastructure developments. PRONATEL will be bankrolled by the institutional budget of the MTC.
Regarding PRONATEL’s plans, the official was quoted as saying that it would ‘intensify and promote the use of regional projects, which will be progressively activated, with traing for the inhabitants so that access to information helps their social and economic activity.’
