Nordic Telecom exits Czech operators’ association; confirms use of 410MHz-430MHz band for IRS

18 Mar 2019

Czech telecoms services provider Nordic Telecom has decided to terminate its membership in the Association of Mobile Network Operators (APMS), the company confirmed via a press release. The would-be fourth mobile network operator (MNO) said that with the country’s 700MHz frequency auction now approaching, it considers there is ‘a growing discrepancy in the view of the state and future of the Czech telecommunications market’. Specifically, the telco – which acquired 3.7GHz band spectrum in 2017 and revealed ambitions to become a fully integrated fourth MNO – claimed in the release that: ‘As an operator that wants to change the Czech market, we could no longer find agreement with other members on the key issues, such as the upcoming auction, the view of the entry of a new mobile operator into the Czech market or proposed changes in legislation … we want to be a fully-fledged competitor to the three major mobile operators [Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2 CR] for voice calls and for fast, affordable mobile internet. The ongoing debate about the current state of the Czech market and the offer of mobile data will certainly be reflected in the conditions of the 700MHz auction, which is now being prepared by the Czech Telecommunication Office.

In a separate press release, meanwhile, Nordic Telecom confirmed that it continues to build and cover the Czech Republic with a 4G LTE network in the 410MHz-430MHz frequency band. Newly harmonised via an amendment to ECC/DEC/16 (02), the band will primarily be used to provide broadband services for critical communication, it says. In short, the LTE network will be used for mobile communication of the Integrated Rescue System (IRS) of the Czech Republic or for communication within critical industries (e.g. energy), and is fully compliant with 3GPP standards, which also applies to commercial networks of mobile operators.
