Jazz inks expansion deal with Nokia; Zong ties up with SCO

Wireless provider Jazz has signed a five-year network expansion and upgrade deal with Finnish vendor Nokia, covering central and southern Punjab province as well as Sindh and Baluchistan, including the cities of Faisalabad, Multan, Bhawalpur, Rahimyar Khan and Sukkur. Under the deal, Nokia’s will provide its AirScale base stations, AirFrame-based cloud controllers and NetAct network monitoring system. The programme also includes the rollout of Massive MIMO technology in certain locations to improve capacity and download speeds.

Commenting on the agreement, Jazz CTO Khalid Shehzad said: ‘Expanding 4G coverage across all cities and towns in Pakistan is one of the key strategic pillars of Jazz to fuel the consumption of broadband services. Nokia’s advanced equipment coupled with its commitment to provide quality professional services will ensure that our subscribers enjoy superior service experience. It will help us maintain our growth momentum and attract new subscribers.’

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Chinese-owned cellco Zong has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-backed operator Special Communications Organisation (SCO) to cooperate on providing telecommunications services in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The MoU will focus on the expansion of mobile services to remote communities.
