State-backed Brazilian regional operator Copel Telecom could be privatised, an incoming local government official has informed the media. Carlos Roberto Massa Junior – the governor-elect for the State of Parana – made the claims on a trip to New York. Massa, who will take office on 1 January 2019, said that privatisation would help Copel Telecom to become a more agile, competitive business.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Copel Telecom is 100% owned by Parana-based state power company Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel), which is itself majority-owned by the State of Parana. In February 2018 reports emerged linking TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) with a BRL1 billion (USD259.1 million) takeover for Copel Telecom, in an effort to further its regional broadband expansion plans.
