AIS kicks off 5G demos in 26GHz band; True Move to follow in December

26 Nov 2018

Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has kicked off its 5G demonstration in the 26GHz spectrum band, after receiving the green light from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) last week, The Bangkok Post writes. AIS’s 5G demonstrations, carried out in collaboration with telecom equipment maker Nokia, took place at a booth at Emporium, the luxury shopping mall in Khlong Toei District, and were conducted using several approaches: 5G super-speed, 5G ultra-low latency with cooperative cloud robot, 5G for Industry 4.0, 5G virtual reality and 5G Fifa virtual reality.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, last week the NBTC gave operators the green light to use the 26GHz spectrum range for the first round of 5G technology testing between 22 November and 15 December. Thailand’s telcos must report their results to the NBTC following the trials, including the related effects of 26GHz usage on other communications systems, NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith was cited as saying.

Rival mobile operator, meanwhile, True Move is planning to launch its 5G trial in the 28GHz band at Iconsiam in December, in partnership with Huawei.
