24 Oct 2018

Telstra has selected Ericsson as its 5G network provider, with the announcement of the partnership agreement made at an event marking the upgrade of the Australian operator’s 50th base transceiver station (BTS) with the next generation technology. Commenting on the deal, Borje Ekholm, Ericsson’s president and CEO, said: ‘Telstra and Ericsson have continued to demonstrate industry leadership through ongoing innovation and collaboration with best-in-class partners needed to build an end-to-end 5G ecosystem. Together we have put in place the fundamentals that will enable Telstra to succeed in 5G.’

Alongside the agreement, Telstra has confirmed the addition of 5G technology to a number of live BTS across the cities of Adelaide, Perth and Canberra. The cellco noted that Adelaide’s first base station to become 5G-capable is located in Flinders Street, with Perth’s first at Narrows Bridge in the city’s central business district (CBD) and Canberra’s first at Pialligo. The latest upgrades mean that Telstra has now upgraded 50 BTS to 5G-capabability countrywide; other locations where work has been carried out include Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast.
