Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has claimed bragging rights as the first operator to provide Wi-Fi Calling (a.k.a. Voice-over-Wi-Fi [VoWiFi]) in St Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region, alongside VoLTE services. Wi-Fi Calling is aimed at subscribers making and receiving calls in locations where the cellular signal transmission is weak, whilst VoLTE gives an upgraded voice call quality and shorter call connection times, as well as enabling simultaneous IP voice connection with uninterrupted high speed mobile broadband internet/data connection. VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling are available on a wide range of smartphones from manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG and others.
