Italian 5G auction passes EUR4bn

Italy’s 5G spectrum auction has attracted offers of almost EUR4.15 billion (USD4.87 billion) after its sixth day of competitive bidding. The sale of 700MHz frequencies concluded last week having raised a total of EUR2.04 billion, while bidding in the 3.6GHz-3.8GHz and 26GHz bands will resume today (Friday 21 September). The four blocks on offer in the 3.7GHz range have brought offers totalling EUR1.95 billion, while the 26GHz spectrum has so far attracted bids of EUR164 million. There are five companies vying for spectrum: mobile network operators (MNOs) TIM, Wind Tre, Vodafone and Iliad, plus ISP Fastweb.
