Tele2 NL raises capacity with Ciena packet-optical platform

11 Sep 2018

Tele2 Netherlands (Tele2 NL) has deployed US-based Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform to increase the capacity of its network, lower operating costs and support galloping mobile video streaming traffic demand from users. The Ciena platform is powered by WaveLogic Ai – ‘the industry’s first programmable coherent modem that can scale to 400Gbps per wavelength’, enabling Tele2 NL to deploy 300G and 400G wavelengths across most of its existing network whilst giving the operator the ability to ‘adapt and make autonomous decisions to improve performance’, a press release declared. Tele2 NL’s CTO Meile de Haan said that the technology will allow it to ‘seamlessly scale for future applications’. Frank Miller, Ciena’s Europe, Middle East & Africa CTO, added: ‘With WaveLogic Ai [Tele2 NL] can increase capacity, monitor, control, and ensure the network can adapt to accommodate changing user demands.’
