SmarTone launches LAA LTE

Hong Kong cellco SmarTone has launched the territory’s first commercial Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) LTE-A network, supporting speeds of up to 1Gbps using aggregate licensed and unlicensed LTE carriers with 5CC carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO and 256QAM. SmarTone described the launch as ‘another key milestone on the road to 5G’. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, SmarTone is the smallest of Hong Kong’s four mobile network operators (MNOs), with around 16% of the local cellular market in subscriber terms.
