Alcom carries out 5G field tests on Aland Islands

29 Jun 2018

Alcom, a multiservice provider based on the Aland Islands in the Baltic Sea, has conducted 5G field tests in partnership with Swedish vendor Ericsson, after the latter confirmed earlier this month that it had successfully achieved interoperability based on the recently finalised 5G New Radio (NR) Standalone standard. In a press release regarding the development, it was confirmed that between 27 and 28 June Alcom and Ericsson conducted 5G field tests in Mariehamn, the largest town on the islands, using spectrum in the 3.5GHz band, with the pair measuring 5G radio capabilities in rural, urban, and maritime environments.

Ericsson is the supplier of Alcom’s current LTE network including radio and core components, and it has been claimed that the results of the 5G tests will help the operator with the design and eventual rollout of a future 5G network. including planning for new products and services.
