Renatelsat signs deal to overhaul satellite connectivity

29 May 2018

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC’s) National Satellite Telecommunication Network (Reseau National de Telecommunication par Satellite, Renatelsat) has signed a cooperation agreement with Africa Union Financial Services (AUFS) that aims to rehabilitate the company, Agence Ecofin reports. The agreement includes a build, operate, transfer (BOT) contract, through which AUFS will install modern equipment in the nation’s major cities, and secure capacity on Belarusian orbiter Belintersat-1. Telecom minister Emery Okundji was quoted as saying that the partnership ‘marks an important step in the efforts of the government of the republic to ensure better connectivity for all our citizens in the area of digital transformation.’ Alongside the infrastructure improvements, AUFS will also provide training and support for Renatelsat to ensure the operator’s long-term technical and financial autonomy.
