O2 UK to connect 1,000 locations using recently acquired 2.3GHz spectrum

British mobile network operator (MNO) O2 has announced that it will connect more than 1,000 sites using its newly acquired 4G spectrum by the end of this year. Having secured frequencies in the 2.3GHz band at auction earlier this month, the cellco confirmed it has already switched on sites to transmit the new 4G spectrum, and expects to have 100 sites operational by the end of this month, including in London, Leeds and Nottingham. Looking ahead, O2 UK has said that its deployment of new 4G spectrum will reach more than 1,000 sites nationwide, spanning more than ten cities by the end of the year, with the rollout plan understood to prioritise enhancing performance on major transportation hubs in major cities, and in busy shopping areas. The MNO said the 4G rollout is part of its commitment to delivering the best mobile experience for its customers across the UK, and has claimed it is currently investing GBP2 million (USD2.8 million) per day to maintain and improve its network.

Commenting on the 2.3GHz frequency utilisation plan, O2 UK’s chief operating officer Derek McManus said: ‘We know how important a fast and reliable connection is to our customers which is why we’re putting our new 4G spectrum to use as quickly as possible. We were able to switch on the first sites within 24 hours. Our swift deployment of new 4G spectrum will further enhance the O2 experience for all of our UK customers.’
