StarHub, Singapore’s second largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, has increased its peak mobile 4G LTE data speeds from 400Mbps to 1Gbps. The cellco claims to be the first in Singapore to offer a commercially-ready 1Gbps network for its mobile customers. Subscribers currently using StarHub’s ‘Unlimited Weekend’ post-paid mobile plan will be able to access the maximum connection speed of 1Gbps, providing they have a 1Gbps-capable handset, such as the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the Sony Xperia XZ2.
StarHub’s 1Gbps network has been deployed in Marina Bay and now also covers the Central Business District, as well as town centres including Bedok, Bishan, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Clementi, Orchard Road and Tampines. The cellco will expand its 1Gbps coverage in stages to other high-traffic areas of Singapore. StarHub has also signed a multi-year agreement with Finnish vendor Nokia to deploy network upgrades using its advanced radio access, small cells, virtualised core and IP routing technologies, as well as a number of other key initiatives. CTO at StarHub, Chong Siew Loong said that working in partnership with Nokia will ‘bolster Singapore’s standing as one of the world’s fastest, smartest and most connected countries.’
