Teletalk to launch 4G services by August

3 Apr 2018

Teletalk is preparing to launch a 4G mobile service in big cities by August, with plans to invest BDT2 billion (USD23.9million) from its own funds to upgrade 1,100 mobile sites. The Daily Star has cited Teletalk Managing Director Kazi Md Golam Quddus as saying that the government needs to give its approval before the 4G offers could be availed: ‘…hope [the investment] will give a breath of fresh air.’ He said Teletalk aims to ensure 4G coverage at every upazila by 2019 and every union by 2020 along with over 98% of the country’s geographical area. However, the parliamentary standing committee on posts, telecommunications and information technology has expressed dissatisfaction with the plan, as the amount of investment is not sufficient compared to private operators. Committee member Kazi Firoz Rashid said: ‘GrameenPhone invested BDT390 billion, Robi BDT290 billion and Banglalink BDT192 billion, while Teletalk only BDT38.4 billion [since inception], and for this its services are stuck within the boundaries of the capital.’
