Smart Communications, the wireless arm of Philippine telco PLDT Inc., says it has started to activate five-component channel (5CC) carrier aggregation in Marikina City, boosting the speeds achieved by LTE-A mobile devices to over 500Mbps. The cellco confirms that in a series of recent tests in one high population density area of the city, Smart’s LTE-A network achieved consistent downlink data rates of over 500Mbps using a 5CC-capable Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone, hitting a peak of 558Mbps at one point. Commenting on the daytime trials, Mario G Tamayo, senior vice president for network planning and engineering at PLDT and Smart, said: ‘Our LTE-A deployment proves that we have a network that’s capable of providing unprecedented data speeds and world-class internet quality, and has enough capacity to efficiently meet the rapidly rising mobile data traffic.’ The cellco has already deployed 2CC, 3CC and 4CC in cities across Metro Manila, and in major cities in other regions of the country. It uses 4×4 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) in its network, which raises the efficiency of available radio frequencies by using multiple antennas for sending and receiving data, and 256 QAM, which enables the transfer of more data from a cellsite tower to a device.
