Manx Telecom names first areas for commercial FTTP offering

9 Mar 2018

Manx Telecom has revealed the first two areas where it is commercialising fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology, which it says will offer end users downlink data speeds of up to 1Gbps. FTTP connectivity will be delivered via the telco’s wholesale network, it says, and customers will be able to sign up for a service via any of the island’s ISPs. According to Manx Telecom, from 12 March ISPs will be able to take orders for FTTP broadband from would-be subscribers in the island’s main business district – Athol Street in the capital, Douglas, – as well those in the residential estate Reeyt Ny Sheear, in Douglas.

Graham Shimmin, Head of Wholesale at Manx Telecom, said of the development: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be launching new [FTTP] technology on the island and rolling out services to homes and businesses through 2018 and beyond … By the end of this year we are aiming to have made direct fibre broadband available to approximately 4,600 residential and business premises on the island.’
