Nationwide Russian fixed network operator Rostelecom has received approval from the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) to make a purchase offer for B2B-focused operator Avantel, ComNews reports. Avantel has more than 12,000 client companies, with the bulk of its business concentrated in Novosibirsk (in the Siberian Federal District), whilst it has branches including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Tomsk, Barnaul, Nizhnevartovsk and Nefteyugansk, offering telephony, internet/data transmission and other B2B telecom solutions, with annual revenue of roughly RUB1.5 billion (USD26 million). The report adds that Rostelecom – which is making its offer for Avantel via its wholly owned subsidiary Bashinformsvyaz – is seen by analysts as looking to protect its leading position in the Siberian corporate segment from competitors including ER-Telecom.
