Hong Kong expects commercial 5G in 2020

4 Dec 2017

The government of Hong Kong says it is expecting the territory to be among the world’s earliest adopters of 5G mobile technology in 2020. A report from the South China Morning Post cites IT sector legislator Charles Mok as saying that, once the 5G standard is formalised by the ITU in 2019, work will be carried out to upgrade the territory’s wireless networks ready for a launch the following year. Although some local cellcos have criticised the telecoms regulator OFCA for not doing enough to promote the development of 5G by releasing further spectrum prior to 2019, authorities say they are awaiting the formal standardisation of 5G before making a decision on which frequencies to offer to operators.
