State-run fixed and mobile operator Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL) says it is close to finalising its deployment of 4G LTE networks in the country’s major cities, including Kampala, Entebbe, Gulu, Mbarara, Mbale, Tororo, Busia and Fort Portal. Local newspaper The Independent reports that the telco is expecting to invest around USD4 million to upgrade equipment at 100 sites. Rival operators Africell (formerly Orange Uganda), Airtel, MTN, Smile and Vodafone/Afrimax have already deployed FDD or TDD LTE systems.
