Afrimax closes Vodafone-branded business in Cameroon

13 Nov 2017

Afrimax Cameroon has announced that it has ceased operations effective 10 November 2017, following the withdrawal of its licence by the local regulatory authorities in September. The company, which operated under the brand name Vodafone Cameroon under a licensing agreement with the UK’s Vodafone Group, concluded that it was ‘no longer commercially viable to resume services in Cameroon’. Vodafone Group has no equity interest in Afrimax or Vodafone Cameroon.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Vodafone Group and Afrimax Group announced a non-equity Partner Market agreement for Cameroon in September 2016 and commercial TD-LTE services were launched later that month in Douala and Yaounde. With a view to expanding its network, Afrimax signed a ‘strategic national network sharing agreement’ with state-owned telecoms operator CamTel, enabling the launch of LTE services in other towns and cities in August 2017. Just one month later, however, the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (Agence de Regulation des Telecommunications – ART) and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (Minpostel) suspended the company’s activities, claiming that its operating licence became invalid when it was transferred to Afrimax Group from Northwave (the original holder of the licence, now 100% owned by Afrimax).
