Airtel Tanzania, the local mobile unit of Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel, has revealed it is rolling out 3G technology in the 900MHz frequency band, with the aim of improving the quality and coverage of its mobile data services. Work on the ‘U900’ project has already been carried out in the cities of Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Mwanza, to be followed by Dodoma, Morogoro and other locations. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Airtel launched a 3.5G HSDPA network, operating in the 2100MHz band, in December 2008 and went on to introduce HSPA+ services in March 2012, boosting theoretical data rates up to 21Mbps.
