Swisscom partners with Ericsson for Gigabit LTE and 5G

8 Nov 2017

Full service provider Swisscom has selected Ericsson to carry out a nationwide deployment of Gigabit LTE from 2018 and 5G technology from 2020. Swisscom will implement Ericsson’s radio access solutions, including small cells, network functions virtualisation infrastructure (NFVI), virtualised evolved packet core (vEPC) and virtualised IMS. In a press release, the pair noted that they have already begun work on upgrading Swisscom’s LTE network to achieve download speeds in excess of 1Gbps, with the first sites due to be active in eleven cities by the end of the year. Swisscom’s 4G network currently offers download speeds of up to 450Mbps to 60% of the population and 300Mbps speeds to 80%.

Swisscom CTO Heinz Herren said of the agreement: ‘We would like to offer the best network to our customers in Switzerland – today and in the future. That’s why we invest massively in the latest mobile network technologies such as Gigabit LTE and 5G. Ericsson is a true leader in 5G technology and I am convinced that together, we will achieve our goal to deliver greater innovation and provide customers with the best experiences.’
