SK Telecom, Samsung stage 4G, 5G interworking trial in Seoul

28 Sep 2017

SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics have successfully completed what they claim is ‘the world’s first 4G LTE and 5G end-to-end network interworking trial’ in a real outdoor environment. To enable interworking between 4G and 5G technologies, the companies used the current 4G LTE commercial network in the 2.6GHz band alongside newly built 5G networks which utilise 3.5GHz and 28GHz frequencies, as well as virtualised core and a test device that supports both 4G and 5G technologies.

The trial took place on Eulji-ro Avenue in Seoul, and involved a 360 degree virtual reality video being streamed live between a user in a travelling car and another user in the telco’s headquarters. The area was selected on account of its closely situated office buildings and busy traffic.
