Vietnamobile achieves nationwide 3G coverage

13 Sep 2017

Vietnamobile, Vietnam’s fourth largest mobile operator by subscribers, has revealed its 3G network is now available in all 63 cities and provinces of the country. Viet Nam News cites the firm’s CEO Elizabete Fong as saying that coverage has been expanded to encompass 90% of the population nationwide, in order to meet the growing demand for mobile data services.

Vietnamobile is a joint stock company (JSC) between Hanoi Telecom Company (HTC) and Hutchison Asia Telecom (HAT), a wholly owned unit of multinational conglomerate CK Hutchison. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the cellco launched commercial 3G services in December 2011, offering maximum download speeds of up to 21.6Mbps. Services were initially available in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City, Da Nang and Hanoi, but coverage was subsequently expanded to Ba Ria-Vung Tau, An Giang, Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan, Dong Thap, Long An, Dong Nai, Thai Nguyen and Binh Duong. Twelve months ago Vietnamobile signed contracts with equipment vendors Ericsson and ZTE for the expansion of its 3G network to all 63 provinces and cities by the end of 2017.
