China Unicom and Ericsson have announced the commercial launch of ‘Gigabit LTE’ mobile network services. Part of the launch on 23 August involved an LTE Broadcast-based virtual reality demo for passengers on the Hainan Island high speed train, using the newly upgraded gigabit-capable 4G mobile network, as Unicom and Ericsson also claimed China’s first LTE Broadcast commercial deployment. Chris Houghton of Ericsson said: ‘People will be able to immerse themselves in their video experience and not just understand, but feel the difference with a Gigabit LTE network while they are moving at very fast speeds.’ The vendor’s press release adds that Ericsson recently supported China Unicom in setting up LTE network sections in Guangdong, Hainan, Shandong and Beijing with peak speeds of up to 979Mbps, whilst there are 1Gbps-capable trials ongoing in Sichuan, Hubei, Shanxi, Jilin and Jiangsu provinces.
