The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to hand back CityCell’s mobile spectrum within 24 hours and also revoke a decision to cancel the financially stricken CDMA provider’s operating licence, the Daily Star reports. The order came despite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina – also head of the ICT ministry – giving the BTRC the green light to cancel CityCell’s licence at the end of last week, due to non-payment of fees and charges, following the cancellation of its spectrum allocation in June. The latest Supreme Court reprieve was handed to CityCell following a petition filed by the cellco against the BTRC, whilst it continues to dispute the amount of overdue fees being demanded. The next hearing on the matter has been set for 6 August.
