Telekom Srbija Director General Pedrag Culibrk has confirmed that privatisation is no longer the operator’s main concern and instead the provider will focus on developing fibre connectivity. Local news agency Beta quotes the official as saying: ‘The goal is to connect the majority of apartments and houses to fibre optics … All that is expected in the future in relation to modern innovation in information and communications technology will require a fast internet connection.’ To that end, Mr Culibrk added that Telekom Srbija – which operates under the MTS brand previously used for its wireless subsidiary – signed an EUR150 million deal with Chinese vendor Huawei to improve broadband access speeds in the republic. Through the agreement, the telco is looking to provide broadband speeds of at least 50Mbps for the majority of internet users, with around half of that number to receive speeds of more than 100Mbps.
