Telecom Namibia expands rural WiMAX network

9 May 2017

Namibia’s largest telco by subscribers, Telecom Namibia has announced the deployment of WiMAX technology to the towns of Luderitz and Ondangwa, as well as to locations in some rural areas of Omusati and Zambezi, reports New Era. The new coverage areas brings Telecom Namibia’s number of base stations to 87 nationwide. Company spokesperson Oiva Angula stated that plans are in place to extend the WiMAX network further afield to cover other rural areas not yet served by broadband internet. This is in line with the Harambee Prosperity Plan which calls for the provision of high speed and reliable telecommunication services to underserved areas across Namibia by 2020.
