Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL), the country’s incumbent fixed line operator, has revealed plans to decommission its CDMA and WiMAX platforms by the end of this year. The Times cites MTL’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Tina Das, as saying that the cost of operating the telephony and internet services was ‘extremely high’, adding that there is also ‘a lack of supplier support for the current generation of technologies’. MTL has already stopped marketing the handsets and dongles and expects to begin phasing out of the two platforms in June, with the process scheduled to be concluded within six months. Das stated that the company is exploring alternative products and services using different technologies to introduce on the market in the future.
