Ugandan government extends SIM registration deadline until 19 May

21 Apr 2017

The Ugandan government has announced a 30-day extension to its controversial SIM re-registration programme, after facing legal objections to its original seven-day deadline. The country’s telecoms regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), is requiring all mobile users to validate their existing registered details using the new national ID card. The registration programme will now run until 19 May, with opponents having launched legal action against the initial seven-day cut-off period, saying it would have left many legitimate users facing disconnection.
