Cellcos in Uganda are calling for the government to allow them to access the National Identity Card Database in order to assist with the registration of mobile phone users. The move comes after the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) told operators to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards this week. While a user registration process was previously carried out between 2013 and 2015, the unlicensed sale of SIM cards has continued. According to a report from PC Tech, cellcos now want the government to open up the ID database to improve the registration process.
