Nexttel aims to attract 2m new subs with upcoming 4G launch

20 Feb 2017

Viettel Cameroon, which provides mobile services under the brand name Nexttel, is aiming to sign up a further two million new customers to increase its total wireless subscriber base to five million. Business In Cameroon cites the cellco’s Deputy Managing Director, Haman Oumar, as saying on television channel Canal 2 International that to achieve its goal, Viettel plans to launch commercial 4G LTE services in the near future. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that the company, which is majority-owned by Vietnamese telecoms firm Viettel Group, was awarded its mobile licence in December 2012 and eventually went on to launch 2G services and the country’s first 3G W-CDMA network in September 2014. Viettel’s main rivals, MTN and Orange Cameroon, are already active in the 4G sector, having both launched LTE networks in the country’s main cities in December 2015.
