Orange in talks to acquire Tigo Ghana

2 Feb 2017

Ghanaian media outlets have reported that France’s Orange Group could soon be the new owner of Millicom Ghana (Tigo), with takeover talks said to be at an advanced stage. The development follows reports last month that Tigo itself was in merger negotiations with smaller rival Airtel Ghana, suggesting that Orange could now attempt to negotiate a double deal.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Tigo and Airtel respectively accounted for 14.5% and 12.1% of Ghana’s total mobile user base as at 30 September 2016. As such, the mooted combination of the third and fourth-placed players would see the enlarged entity replace Vodafone Ghana (21.9%) as the second largest mobile operator in Ghana, behind market leader MTN Ghana (48.6%).
