Norwegian-backed cellco Telenor Serbia is planning to invest EUR30 million (USD31.3 million) in network development in 2017, Novosti.rs reports. The extra funds will be used to expand 4G coverage to 80% of the population in the first half of the year, the cellco’s director, Ingeborg Ofsthus was cited as saying. The company spent around EUR35 million on its 3G and 4G networks in 2016, the official said, adding: ‘We have invested a lot in the development of our 3G network to cover the entire population with high speed internet services and we aim to achieve the same with 4G.’ The cellco has also identified a need to educate customers on the advantages of 4G technology, however, noting that whilst smartphone penetration in Serbia is roughly 129%, only around 20% of customers use 4G-enabled phones.
