Telefonica, ZTE deploy vIMS in LatAm ahead of VoLTE rollout

20 Dec 2016

Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica has enlisted Chinese vendor ZTE to build a large-scale virtual IP Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) network in Latin America. The vIMS solution will cover Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Uruguay, and pave the way for the telco to deliver voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) and voice-over-Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services to its customers. The new system will be deployed as a Virtual Network Function (VNF) using ZTE’s virtualisation infrastructure. According to ZTE’s press release the platform enables seamless integration with Telefonica’s legacy networks, and its ‘UNICA’ cloud architecture.
