Gilat Satcom, O3b deploy ‘Fiber in the Sky’ solution in DRC

15 Nov 2016

O3b Networks and Gilat Satcom have announced that the latter has gone live on O3b’s ‘Fiber in the Sky’ satellite network in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Gilat Satcom currently offers connectivity across the DRC, including Kinshasa, and the O3b solution was selected to help ‘customers coping with uneven terrestrial fibre connection in the capital city’. The vendor claims that the solution offers latency and throughput comparable to fibre.

In a separate announcement, O3b notes that since launching commercial services in September 2014, customers in countries such as the DRC, Chad, Somalia, Madagascar, the Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon and Angola have contracted over 7Gbps of internet capacity, supplementing existing satellite links from geostationary systems and fibre connections with limited reliability.
