VNPT-Vinaphone launches LTE on Phu Quoc Island

4 Nov 2016

Vietnamese mobile operator VNPT-Vinaphone has officially activated its 4G LTE network, using the 1800MHz band. The launch took place on 3 November on Phu Quoc Island, in the Kien Giang province, and ensured that the cellco became the first provider to offer LTE in Vietnam. Phu Quoc has also become the first locality to be fully covered, with 100 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) in service at launch. Going forward, VNPT-Vinaphone expects to deploy 21,000 4G BTS nationwide by end-2017.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, VNPT-Vinaphone was issued a 4G concession by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) earlier this month. The company began trialling fourth generation technology on Phu Quoc Island and in Ho Chi Minh City in January this year.
