Serbia’s MTS completes network modernisation pilot

2 Nov 2016

State-backed fixed line incumbent Telkom Srbija – which offers services under the MTS brand – has completed the first stage of its fixed line network modernisation programme in cooperation with Chinese vendor Huawei, transforming its infrastructure in the Aleksinac municipality to an all-IP platform. The EUR1.6 million (USD1.76 million) deployment was completed over a five-month period, and comprised the installation of 52km of fibre and 15km of copper cabling. In a statement, the telco said that the upgrade affected some 10,000 lines, which could previously only offer fixed telephony but are now capable of providing broadband at speeds of up to 100Mbps. The rollout was the pilot for a wider, nationwide overhaul, the operator’s general manager Predgrag Culibrk explained, adding: ‘Our goal is for this investment to significantly raise the quality of the network and the speed of internet access in more than one million households across Serbia.’
