Sweden’s National Post & Telecom Agency (Post & Telestyrelsen – PTS) has cancelled the planned auction of spectrum in the 694MHz-790MHz (700MHz) frequency band, which was scheduled to take place on 1 December, following concerns raised by the government about national security and safety. The 700MHz licences would have been valid from 1 April 2017, but the decision to cancel the auction process means that the frequencies will continue to be used for terrestrial television services until 31 May 2018. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), which is responsible for issues concerning civil protection, public safety, emergency management and civil defence, has been assigned the task of developing a plan to clarify the needs of defence, public safety and health authorities for the spectrum. The PTS said it would resume plans to reassign the 700MHz frequencies once these issues have been resolved.
