Slovakian fixed and mobile operator Orange Slovensko has announced plans to invest more than EUR35 million (USD39 million) to triple its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) footprint within the next three years, from 19 cities at present to almost 60 by the end of 2018. Orange says fibre-based services are currently available to some 345,000 households. Among the towns to receive coverage by the end of this year are Galanta, Holic, Sered, Skalica and Sala, while there will also be an expansion of the existing FTTH networks in the capital Bratislava. While Orange leads Slovakia’s mobile market in terms of subscriber numbers, it trails incumbent operator Slovak Telekom in the broadband sector, claiming only around 12% of all retail connections at mid-2016, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
